Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the format for the WYDOT text-based pages change?
In 2012 WYDOT began the process of bringing its text-based travel information pages in line with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines. The guidelines are based on national "best practices" that incorporate mechanisms to best get information to the public. WYDOT has used the guidelines extensively in creating a column-based display that incorporates colors in an effort to provide "at a glance" information.

What information can be found in the "Conditions" column?
The "Conditions" column contains the reported pavement conditions such as dry, wet, slick, slick in spots and drifted snow. This column also contains the reported atmospheric conditions such as snow, rain, strong wind, fog, blowing snow and reduced visibility. Click here to view the definitions page.

What information can be found in the "Advisories" column?
The "Advisories" column contains reported events that will typically have a greater impact on travel. These events include falling rock, advise no light trailers, no trailer traffic, black ice and no unnecessary travel. Click here to view the definitions page.

What information can be found in the "Restrictions" column?
The "Restrictions" column contains reported events that restrict the movement of specified vehicles. These events include chain law - level 1 and level 2, and closures to light, high profile vehicles. In the future WYDOT will also include Width, Height and Weight restrictions. Click here to view the definitions page.

Why are variable speed limit (VSL) messages located on a separate page?
In order to save screen real estate on the WYDOT District pages, the VSL information was removed to a separate page that is available via a link. This was done because not everyone is looking for VSL information and the VSL information can be quite lengthy.

What is the target audience for each text-based information page?
  Closures/Advisories/Restrictions
The Closures/Advisories/Restrictions page is intended for those travelers that are only interested in the most severe conditions reported in the state. Standard pavement and weather conditions are NOT reported on this page. Only the following conditions are shown:
  • Closures
  • Advisories such as falling rock, no trailer traffic, advise no light trailers, black ice and no unnecessary travel
  • Restrictions such as chain law - level 1 and level 2, and closure to light, high profile vehicles
  By City
The By City page is intended for those travelers that are interested in the conditions on all routes around a city. This page is also useful for those travelers that are unfamiliar with the route numbers.
  By Route
The By Route page is intended for those travelers that are interested in all conditions on a specified route. Information is presented in a logical progression from west to east and from south to north.
  WYDOT District
The WYDOT District pages are intended for travelers and WYDOT Maintenance personnel who are interested in general regional condition information.
  Variable Speed Limit (VSL)
The VSL page is a new page that presents VSL information from all routes in the state that are equipped with changeable speed limit signs. This page was created in order to minimize the screen real estate used on other pages.
  Chain Law
The Chain Law page is a new page that presents active chain law locations throughout the State. The page consolidates the chain law information from all routes into a single page.

What is the NWS Forecast link?
WYDOT has added links to the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast for each town area to the WYDOT District, By City, By Route, and Closures/Advisories/Restrictions pages. The links bring the user directly to the 7-day forecast on the NWS website for the selected town.
